CTE students in Westminster Public Schools graduate with high-demand skills and knowledge that lead to higher education opportunities and careers in Colorado’s highest-growth industries. 

Project-based Learning

  • Westminster High School (WHS) received a Next Generation Learning grant from the Gates Foundation in 2014. 
  • The introducation of Project-Based Learning (PBL) was made possible as a part of the Next Generation grant. WHS is partnering with the Buck Institute of Learning to implement PBL and integrate with CTE goals:    
    • PBL teaches students to work during an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem or challenge.
    • In Gold Standard PBL, projects are focused on student learning goals and include Essential Project Design Elements.

CBS & CTE Go Hand-in-Hand!

Our Competency Based System (CBS) is organized around engaging students in 21st-century skills, working at their developmental levels, and advancing only when they have demonstrated proficiency. We believe this is the closest mirror to the world of work.

  • As a CBS CTE program, our students receive a deeper level of skill development in their learning.
  • Students learn how mastering content and getting industry-specific skills help builds on their core knowledge, while also leading to expertise they will need in today's workforce. 
  • Scholars will demonstrate their proficiency by meeting the requirements for an entry level certificate or by earning college credit.

STEM Education is a Priority!

  • Our Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) pipeline begins in elementary and runs through both middle and high school. In every building of the district there is a focus on the effective use of technology for instruction and many support Hour of Code
  • STEM interested elementary students can also enroll at the Colorado STEM Academy. Regardless, all students can continue their learning in our Gateway to Technology classes at all 3 middle schools.  Gateway’s middle school units empower students to lead their own discovery in engineering and prepare them for the high school programs.
  • When students reach WHS, they have several STEM-related opportunities: Computer Science, PLTW Biomedical Science and Engineering.
  • Westminster High School has been certified by Project Lead the Way for both the Biomedical and Engineering programs.  This designation means the fidelity with which the course is being taught ensures college credit opportunities to students who successfully complete these courses and the programs overall.  To learn more about Project Lead the Way, check out their website https://www.pltw.org/our-programs.
